I am currently reading One Lonely Degree by C. K. Kelly Martin

"So I guess you have to go." Audrey stands up next to the suitcase. You'd think we'd be smiling, what with the overwhelming amount of pastel orange in the vicinity, but her bottom lip is shaking and that makes me feel worse. "Yeah." I blink back tears and murmur, "It's only two months, right? It'd go by in a flash if you were here." - page 114

This week I'm crazy about...
The Carrier of the Mark by Leigh Fallon

What I love about this cover....
The blue of her dress.

The way that it seems like she's flying or she's really going down, except the cover is flipped, makes this book mysterious and intriguing. I'm dying to know more!

The boldness of the title, it stands out well with the blue color.

The blue of her dress is the only pop of color in this book, makes it look like a book filled with tragic episodes.

How at the bottom, her dress fades out, like ink spilled in water.

Follow Friday's question this week was:
Q. How many books do you read in a week? And in what format do you read them, or listen to them?
A. On average, I read about 1 or 2 books per week. Maybe 1-4 on a good week. I only read books in hard copies.

Book Blogger Hop's question this week was:
Q. What book-to-movie adaptation have you most liked? Which have you disliked?"
A. I don't know if this counts, but I liked the Harry Potter movies, even though I haven't read the books, so I guess I can't really compare it. To be honest, I really disliked the Lightning Thief movie. If you watch it alone without reading the books, you might enjoy it. But since I have read the whole series, I thought the Lightning Thief movie lacked so much from the book.

Twenty Boy Summer

"Last year, when the shock of Matt's death wore off and she stopped calling for him outside his bedroom, Frankie withdrew into a cocoon like a baby caterpillar, lonely and uncertain. She wouldn't talk to anyone--- he parents, my parents, not even to me. Not in a way that mattered." - page 22

This week I'm crazy about...
Dead Rules by Randy Russell

What I love about this cover:

I love the contrast of her dark makeup and bright lips to her pale skin.

I love the contrast of her fiery red hair to the black background.

The fact that she's so pale and her skin is flawless makes her look like porcelain... almost like she's dead, which I'm guessing relates to the "dead" of the title.

I like the font that was used and the size of the title.

Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver REVIEW

Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver
Not in a series
Release date: March 2nd, 2010
Published by Harper Collins
Format: Hardcover, 470 pages
Source: Library
Summary from Goodreads:
What if you had only one day to live? What would you do? Who would you kiss? And how far would you go to save your own life?
Samantha Kingston has it all: the world's most crush-worthy boyfriend, three amazing best friends, and first pick of everything at Thomas Jefferson High-from the best table in the cafeteria to the choicest parking spot. Friday, February 12, should be just another day in her charmed life.
Instead, it turns out to be her last.
Then she gets a second chance. Seven chances, in fact. Reliving her last day during one miraculous week, she will untangle the mystery surrounding her death-and discover the true value of everything she is in danger of losing.

Review:

Sam is a popular girl that dies on February 12th, or Cupid Day. In fact, she dies 7 times. And she gets 7 chances to really learn the value of life.

I wasn't sure about this book when I started reading it. It seemed like any other book about a snobby girl craving popularity. I couldn't help being annoyed with Sam because she only cared about how many roses she had on Cupid Day or whether she'd do the deed with Rob. She didn't see all the nice people in her school because her friends were brainwashing her.

But during the middle, I got a little more into it. It was inspiring to read the transformation and how much mature Sam came to be, during the 5th time she had to relive February the 12th as well as seeing her gain more courage throughout the book, fearless and trying to live out her remaining days of her life without any regrets. She came to treasure and value her family more, and she even made a couple of new friends that on any average day, she would completely ignore, or even make fun of. It was tragic to read the ending, since Sam had to sacrifice herself to save someone else.

The writing was brilliant. I enjoyed this book, but there wasn't enough pizazz for me to say that I loved this book. In fact, I think Sam reliving February the 12th seven times was a bit too much, there could have been some days that the author could've taken out, particularly at the beginning, since it was there that I became really frustrated and annoyed with Sam's character. The ending wasn't all that great, I know that the ending was supposed to leave me feeling wow'ed and touched and shocked all at the same time, but honestly, it just didn't do it for me.

Book Blogger Hop's question this week was:
Q. If you were given the chance to spend one day in a fictional world (from a book), which book would it be from and what would that place be?
A. Hands down, it'd be either Hogwarts from the Harry Potter series, or Narnia from the The Chronicles of Narnia series. Also, I recently finished reading Bitter Frost by Kailin Gow (review here), the world there was called Feyland, and I absolutely loved the way she described it the world she created.

Bitter Frost By Kailin Gow REVIEW

Book 1 in the Frost Series
Release Date: June 1st, 2010 and published by: The Edge
Format: Paperback, 235 pages
Source: Library
Summary from Goodreads: All her life, Breena had always dreamed about fairies as though she lived among them...beautiful fairies living among mortals and living in Feyland. In her dreams, he was always there the breathtakingly handsome but dangerous Winter Prince, Kian, who is her intended. When Breena turns sixteen, she begins seeing fairies and other creatures mortals don't see. Her best friend Logan suddenly acts very protective. Then she sees Kian, who seems intent on finding her and carrying her off to Feyland. That's fine and all, but for the fact that humans rarely survive a trip to Feyland, a kiss from a fairy generally means death to the human unless that human has fairy blood in them or is very strong, and although Kian seemed to be her intended, he seems to hate her and wants her dead.

Review:
I have to be honest, I was skeptic about reading this book because I wasn't in to the whole fairy concept. The inside was far worse, the font was big and the book was thin, and I was thinking, what am I getting myself into? Don't judge a book by its cover. I've never known how true this phrase is until now.
I was absolutely in love with the world created: Feyland. It sounded so wonderful, magical and so pleasant to live in. The author must have known me by heart (haha) to include all other mythological creatures like mermaids and centaurs. I wish I could wake up to the multi-colored skies with two suns overlooking me. With the descriptive language, and vivid descriptions, it felt like I teleported to Feyland and through the whole journey, I was with Kian and Breena myself! I pitied Kian, since he had to make a huge decision, love over his kingdom, or his kingdom over love. And both seemed equally important to him.

It amazed me to see how heroic and courageous each of the main characters were, all willing to sacrifice themselves for the one they love. I liked the boldness of Breena, how she wasn't afraid of anything. At first, I was a little confused about Kian... In the summary, it depicted him as cold and cruel, but in the story, he was the complete opposite! But as I started to get attached to the story, I didn't really care as much. I do have to admit, the love triangle between Breena, Logan and Kian was pleasing to read about. It was Twilight all over again! Breena being Bella, Logan being Jacob and Kian being Edward except fairy version. I liked the whole idea of weaving forbidden love into this action-packed book. Because, let's face it, no novel is complete without romance in it!

I was frustrated at the abrupt ending, since nothing was resolved. I didn't expect it to be a cliffhanger ending either, but now, more then ever, I can't wait to read the second book in the Frost series.

Bitter Frost is like Percy Jackson, The Narnia Chronicles and Twilight combined. You will either love this book like I did, or hate it.

Gorgeous by Rachel Vail REVIEW

SOURCE: LIBRARY
Publisher: Harper Teen, June 1st 2009
282 pages.
What would you give to be beautiful?

Review:
I thought this book would be humorous, and a fun, light read, but I was rather disappointed because, well... it was none of the above.

First off, I didn't like the characters, and even if I liked them, I didn't have that connection with them, which was a little off for me. I didn't like Charlie, even though she was the main character, she was always self-conscious, to the point where it got annoying when she kept repeating that she could was never good enough. I'm not saying, that I don't complain when I get self-conscious, it's just that her complaining went a little overboard. I thought Roxie was a cute, fun character and I just thought she deserved a better friend because of what Charlie has put her through. Obviously, I hated Jade because all she ever did was bring down her friends, especially Charlie.

What I did like though, was reading the bond of Charlie and her family. It surprised to see Charlie and her sisters being so close, and connected, and always sticking for each other. It touched me a little to see that when in troubling times, your family is always there for you, through thick and thin, and they won't ever judge you.

Honestly, I was just so disappointed with this book, during the beginning, it was hard for me to not put down this book and move on, since it was so dull. And half the time, all I ever read about was Charlie complaining. I really don't want to bash on this book, so I think you should still read this book and see what you think of it, since everyone has different opinions.

Rating: 2.5/5

First Sentence: I sold my cell phone to the devil.
Summary: from Goodreads

She's looking good...but Allison Avery can't believe it. Growing up with beautiful, blond sisters, Allison has always been the dark-haired, "interesting-looking" Avery. So when the devil shows up and offers to make her gorgeous, Allison jumps at the chance to finally get noticed. But there's one tiny catch, and it's not her soul: The devil wants her cell phone.

Though her deal with the devil seems like a good idea at the time, Allison soon realizes that being gorgeous isn't as easy as it looks. Are her new friends and boyfriend for real, or do they just like her pretty face? Allison can't trust anyone anymore, and her possessed phone and her family's financial crisis aren't making things any easier. Plus when she finds out that she might be America's next teen model, all hell breaks loose. Allison may be losing control, but how far is she willing to go to stay gorgeous forever?

Following the critically acclaimed LUCKY, Rachel Vail continues her poignant sisterhood trilogy with the rebellious middle Avery sister, Allison. Fiery, sarcastic, and just plain fun, GORGEOUS captures the heartbreak and hilarity in one girl's attempt to have it all.

Q. The Blogger Apocalypse made me a little emotional. What is the most emotional scene in a book that you've recently read lately?
A. I thought the ending for Wintergirls was sad. Well, only the part where Cassie has to go through the part where she has to let go to fully die, and the ending for How to Say Goodbye in Robot.

"...The last thing Mom and Dad need right now is to worry about me, right? It's meaningless. The other girls are all probably, like, professional models. The most that could happen is what? The Girls by Tucker Shaw REVIEW

Happy Mothers Day to all the lovely mothers out there, who have supported us every step of the way, and is our inspiration that keeps us going <3

SOURCE: LIBRARY
The Girls

The Girls was a drama filled novel which I enjoyed reading. I liked that it was short, which allowed to finish it quickly.

Mary was my favorite character, because even though she is the richest girl in her school, she doesn't take it to her head, and use her money for granted. For example, whenever she buys lattes, she always goes to the cheap coffee shops because buying lattes at an expensive coffee shop that tastes the same isn't worth the extra money. I honestly felt really bad for her because she's such a nice girl, yet her boyfriend cheated on her! She's basically the whole package! Nice, smart and pretty. And that got me really mad, how her boyfriend would cheat on her, and Mary was trying so hard to pretend like every things okay. Peggy is an aspiring chef, who is overprotective of Mary, her best friend. And she often gets jealous when Mary is close to other girls. I liked how the story also added Reno, the restaurant that Peggy and Mary works in, which was an interesting setting for a lot of the drama to unfold. Peggy works in the kitchen, being Chef Jackie's sidekick. I was simply in awe from Peggy's ability to taste food and critique it like an expert.

The story was well-written, I couldn't stop reading it! It was surprisingly addicting. I also liked how at the end of the book, there were a lot of recipes, like Chef Jackie's onion soup. Honestly though, the ending was a little rushed. But if you're looking for a fun yet drama-filled read, that'll suck you in, definitely read this book.

Rating: 3/5
Cover: 7/10
Character(s) I liked: Chef Jackie, Mary
Character(s) I disliked: Crystal, Sylvia

First line: Mary Moorhead became my best friend the day I arrived at Maroon Bells School for Girls in Aspen, Colorado, last September. - page 1

Summary: from Goodreads
Meet Mary: She’s beautiful, and her ski-star boyfriend is cheating on her.

Meet Crystal: She’s a townie, and she’s cheating with Mary’s boyfriend.

Meet Sylvia: She’s nasty, and she’s got something up her Prada-designed sleeve.

Meet Amber: She’s a flake, she’s the barista at the hottest coffee shop in Aspen, and she serves up gossip even hotter than grande skim lattes.

Meet Peggy: She’s Mary’s best friend, and she has no idea how to cope with all these girls.

A modern retelling of the classic play The Women (which featured not one male in the cast), The Girls is a quick-witted, stylish comedy about friendship, love, and most important, gossip! An elite Aspen prep school sets the stage for jealousy and intrigue as the lives of many girls tangle into a wickedly fun mess (in which no boys ever appear).
